Costa Rica, Central Vallery

Central Valley Costa Rica Zone

This region includes San José (the capital of Costa Rica ), Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago. In the Central Valley area there is a great variety of activities worth exploring. The gastronomical diversity of the area is the result of a mix between national and international dishes.

The high-class hotels are located in the Central Valley . This area also offers the tourist popular services like hostels, bed and breakfast, as well as “sodas”, small restaurants and cafeterias.

Six of the best museums of the country are in San José . Cultural activities such as theatre and contemporary dance, together with academic activities, are an integral part of region that is proud of its high standards of education and health. San José is also the Government's home and the political life of the country. Outside the capital city you can find traditional towns of great beauty showing off colonial Costa Rica .

San José has day and night cultural activities in dance rooms, bars and discos. The fairs in honor of the patron saint of each town take place regularly. The end of the year fair is one of the main tourist attractions both for nationals and foreigners. The Light Festival, which takes place in early December, is already a tradition that sets the beginning of the New Year, with a parade of floats and bands.

The climate of the Central Valley favors agricultural activity, where the best coffee of Costa Rica is produced. Its quality is due to the altitude and temperature, ideal for its production. Other crops important to the region are, sugar cane, fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants. Production of trout is also an important activity. Trout farms open their doors to people so they can visit and fish their own trout and later have it cooked in the farm's restaurant. You can find places like this in Valle de Orosí and in Sarchí.

Can't Miss in your Vacations in Costa Rica
Poas Volcano. It has one of the largest craters in the world. At the summit you'll find two craters, the main one has a diameter of 0.93 miles, the second crater is now a cold water lagoon called Laguna Botos.
InBio. Internationally known scientific research institution that also features tourism attractions and the Biodiversity Park.

Coffee Tours. Tours of coffee plantations teach you all about the process, from planting the seed to enjoying a good cup of java. Among the different options, Cafe Britt (Heredia) and Doka Estate (Alajuela) are the most famous.

Braulio Carrillo National Park. The northwestern end of the valley includes more than 108 thousand acres of protected rainforest. Several dormant volcanoes are also part of the park.

National Theater. Built between 1890 and 1897, this edifice's construction costs were paid for by the Costa Rican people through import taxes. The National Theater is home to valuable pieces by Italian artists, and is still in good condition after 100 years. The pride of Costa Ricans, the Theater is the center of the country's main cultural, artistic and political activities, and was declared a National Monument in 1965.

Orosi Valley. The first two Spanish settlements (Ujarras and Orosi) were located in this valley. Colonial ruins and hot springs are part of the attraction.

Los Angeles Basilica. The home of Costa Rica's patron saint was built in 1921 and combines Roman, Arabic and Gothic architecture.

Cerro de *La Muerte*. With a height of 11,300 feet above sea level, the mountain is covered by a very interesting forest. It sometimes reaches very cold temperatures, even below 0 Celsius.

Irazu Volcano. The Caribbean and Pacific can be seen from Costa Rica's tallest volcano: the 11,259-feet Irazu, which is still active.

Turrialba Volcano. The 3,106-acre park protects a 10,958-feet volcano. It stems from Irazu's base, which is why they are considered twin volcanoes.

Turrialba. This community in Cartago is the doorway to the Caribbean. It is also known as the white-water rafting capital due to the challenging rivers Reventazon and Pacuare.

Ruinas de Ujarrás. The Purisima Concepción del Rescate church in Ujarras belonged to Franciscan missionaries and it was built during the XVI Century.
